Showing Your Pride

June is Pride Month! This blog post, we're going to take the time to go over some things that we can do to actively show our support for the LGBTQIA+ community . Last year, we went over the history of where Pride Month comes from, so I recommend going back to that post if you're wanting a little more background.

So, here are some things we can do to support our LGBTQ community:

1.Know the importance of pride month and why we celebrate it. We celebrate pride to emphasize the need for equity and equality in the treatment of all people groups. We do it to emphasize the need for acceptance, and to celebrate the work of the LGBTQIA+ community.

2. Go to a pride event! There are probably lots in your community. Show your support and take the time to learn about the importance of supporting the LGBTQ community in your own community.

3. Embrace some LGBTQ media. Here is a great list of some LGBTQ positive books. Go to your library or your bookstore and engage in some learning.

4. If someone comes out to you, support them. You might be surprised, and you're allowed to have your feelings, but love them for who they are. You might even want to thank them for their bravery in telling you. The website hyperlinked here has some really good ideas for what to say, too, that I definitely suggest looking at.

5. If you happen to have kids, engage them in talking about pride or doing some pride-related activities. Depending on how old your kid is, do a rainbow colouring activity, or maybe watch an age-appropriate movie with your kids. The list goes on of things to do with your kids to celebrate pride at this website here!

6. Do some studying of art and artists who support the LGBTQ community. For example, most of us know about the artist Frida Kahlo, who was bisexual. Take some time to study her art and her history, or look into some other artists who support the LGBTQIA+ community.

7. Do something simple, like getting a rainbow or flag pin to wear, or sticker to put on your water bottle or laptop. That way you can openly demonstrate your allyship every day of the year.

These are just some ideas of what you can do to show your support for the LGBTQ community. It's important that we show our allyship all of the time, but this June, take time to think about what you can do to make Pride Month special. And, see what you can do to bring Pride into life each day. Happy Pride!
